What Is Love?

Lately, I’ve been thinking about love(no I’m not in love Mom!) and how we as a society have a lot of ideas and things to say about it: our rights to love whoever we want, definitions of what love even is, and how we all are looking for it, etc. Movies and our culture make love seem so easy, fairytale-esque, and all about either feelings or sex. If what culture says is true and the only way to experience love…then I personally would never be able to be “in love.”

Well for one, I’m single and not in a relationship. Two, I’m attracted to men(only). Three, I am a Christian so that means my only option to experience anything sexual is in the context of marriage with a woman. So for the definitions that many have for love, my present circumstance hinders me from ever really experiencing it. But I know there has to be so much more to it than just that!

1 Corinthians 13 defines love as “patient, kind, not jealous, does not brag and is not arrogant, does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness but rejoices with the truth, bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things.”

According to THE One who knows fully what love is about, who IS love, there is much love for me to have(and give). Real love isn’t based on any attraction or feeling because real love is more than skin or emotion deep. Real love is something we owe to ALL people, even those that reject and hurt us…especially ones we see as not really attractive, odd, different, awkward, or irritating.

“God’s love begins with our will and ends with

our emotions, while the world’s love begins with the

emotions and ends with the will.”   -Chad Thompson

We are all able to experience love on a deep level right NOW. But I think most are either too afraid, hurt, or unavailable to attempt going there. The greatest acts of love look like serving others, putting their needs before your own, and being willing to give anything(even if it’s uncomfortable, unnatural, or inconvenient)for the sake of their good. This is love and this is what we all at the core want and long for. Check out my video to hear more on love!
